“Hello?” She said aloud again, her throat feeling coarse.
She couldn’t remember how she got here, the last thing she could remember was... not much, a blank slate filling up her head. Hannah shook her head and slowly made her way to the door. She pulled open the door, barely able to swing it open. The first thing she saw was another bed right in front of her, as if it were barricading the door. She crawled under it and looked around, fear tingling down her spine.
The entire hallway was empty and dark with the lights flickering to life occasionally. There were clothes on the ground but no people and it was eerily silent. She tip toed through the hallway, holding on to the back of her gown, making sure her ass wasn’t visible. She peeked by a corner and saw more emptiness, no nurses, doctors or patients. Her mind raced through her memories trying to pick up anything that would help her understand what was going on. It was a futile attempt as she made her way to the nurse’s bathrooms.
She wandered through the shower room to find open lockers and clothes strewn everywhere. Hannah looked around before grabbing a pair of jean shorts, a white t-shirt, what appeared to be clean socks and some sneakers that kind of fit her small feet. She saw a pair of thongs dangling on the corner of a locker room door and contemplated.
“No way I’m wearing someone’s worn underwear. Fuck it.” She murmured as she pulled the jean shorts up.
She threw on the white t-shirt, hopped into her socks and sneakers then jogged over to the sinks and turned on the water, drinking up as much as she could with her hands. The water felt cool against her rough throat and she wondered how long she had been without water. She washed her face quickly before grabbing another shirt and wiping her face with it. She took another quick look around, wondering if this was some prank, her mind hoping that someone would hop out of the showers and yell “surprise!” but it was not to be.
Hannah made her way out of the lockers and towards the entrance of the hospital. She began to speed up as she saw the sun shining through the doors. Once she pushed open the doors, a breath of fresh air filled her lungs and she closed her eyes, letting the warm sun beam down on her. After a few moments, she opened her eyes and stared in stunned silence. The roads were a mess, cars in the middle of the road, some crashed, others just abandoned. Off in the distance, she could see black smoke rising from somewhere. She wondered if another terrorist attack had hit as she began to remember exactly where she was, New York City. The city so nice they named it twice.
