This is the way it was. Cold, uncomfortable. Plagued with violence.
There was no light. We all knew that, but we didn’t know anything else. We did not know how to change it.
That’s all different now. There is a way.
You have to try. That’s all there is to it. You can’t just give up, surrendering to the darkness. Even a lamb being led to the slaughter will cry out. Hoping that somewhere out there, somebody will care.
Rebel against the darkness, that insidious creeping thing that gets into your veins and fills you with disgust at your own self. Get it out!
I can no longer pretend that I do not know the difference. There was a time when I could feign ignorance. I thought darkness was part of the plan, that I was in it for a reason. But something changed. I got sick of it all. Very, very sick. I cried out. Someone showed up. And that changed everything.
He jumped out at me while I was walking along the road, minding my own business. I had no idea he would be so tall.
“Rebekah?” he whispered softly, peering down at me from those incredible brown eyes that saw only me. I saw only him.
When I stopped staring, he continued speaking.
