Judy never discovered why Archie and David hated each other, and she didn’t care either.  It was all so trivial.  Everything was trivial compared to Archie.

On the night she met Archie, Judy had let David take her to the drive-in.  Afterward she let David drive her to an empty lot that would be a new subdivision someday.  Maybe because Elvis was playing on the radio, or maybe because summer was half over, Judy let David take off her blouse and bra – further than she’d ever let a boy go before.  As if in punishment the night was suddenly bright with headlights.

“Where’s my blouse?” Judy whispered, but of course David didn’t know.

Car doors opened and slammed.  Pounding feet and cruel laughter were coming toward them, and Judy’s hands found the most precious piece of fabric in the world.  She got one button closed just as the doors of David’s car were yanked open.
