The last day of college was a relief to me.
As I sat in the passenger seat of my brother’s truck, I watched as unfortunate souls hiked up the stairs to the old stone building. The air was heavy with heat and I was glad not to be carrying around a backpack full of textbooks anymore.
I couldn’t say I missed those days, full of studying and beating my head off my desk in frustration. Medical school did that to you. It consumed years of your life. Though, in the end it was worth it. I would be seeing big, fat paycheques when I started my new job, not to mention a large signing bonus. All that hard work would finally pay off – literally.
My auburn hair flicked out through the window of the truck as a gust of wind swept through the vehicle. I rolled up the window, succumbing to the roasting heat inside.
Where is that brother of mine? I thought impatiently, not wanting to die of this wretched temperature. He had gone inside for a moment – just a moment, he promised – to grab a book he had forgotten.
My brother – Evan – was a bit of a bookworm. I’m not sure how he managed to get through medical school. He read more fiction books than actual textbooks in class, skipped lectures to attend book signings of his favourite authors, and wasted his student loans on buying the latest and greatest in the world of literature.
