We walked til dawn. I held his hand as the sun rose slowly over the blue hills. There was no other. He was mine.
“Whisper you love me,” I teased as he walked beside me, long and gangly, but sure of himself.
He was my childhood sweetheart but we had never wed. I hoped some day to win his heart completely, as he had mine.
“Rebekah,” he smiled, and tickled my ear with his warm breath. “You know I do.”
I laughed, but it was a shallow laugh, wanting more and not getting it.
“Tell me,” I said. “Tell me, please. I want to hear the words.”
I knew I was sounding insecure and I hated myself for it. When would I ever grow up? But I wanted him so desperately, and knew that he never would.
I walked away from him that day. Let him go, finally. There was no time left to banter words with no meaning. I had enough love in my heart for a hundred guys who would love me better than him.
So I let him slip away. Gone, like he never was.
I cried at first, hot, bitter tears, tinged with remorse. I wanted to call him back, but my pride would not let me. I wanted to say, “It’s okay if you don’t love me, I will love enough for both of us.”
But I couldn’t do it. I had finally grown out of self hatred to need more than that. I wanted the one true love that would last forever.
