The Black Dog, the Curtain and the Other World

by Vincent Geldenhuys

Much has been speculated and much has been written about the symbolic meaning of Sirius Black. He is possibly one of the most intriguing of all of Joanne Rowling’s characters by virtue of his extensive signification. He also happens to be one of the most endearing. Sirius itself is the name of the brightest star in the night sky, and as such it features prominently in world mythology, in contemporary spirituality and in esoteric astrology. It is for this reason that Sirius Black may well be one of the most important of Joanne Rowling’s symbolic characters.
