Carter looked out into the darkness beyond the third-story window, his gaze on the glimmering city lights below. Twinkling and distant, they filled him with a sense of longing he couldn't put a name to, and reminded him of colorful stars. Much like stars, they were just out of his reach. Vaguely the lights brought to mind dark streets illuminated by neon and sodium lights, inviting laughter, and the anticipatory jangle of keys. Cool, fresh air danced coyly in the trees and causing the figures to shake their fruit beyond the pane.
