Chapter 1

I knew I could adjust. So far my early retirement was a bigger change for my wife than me. Thirty years in law enforcement and twenty-five of those as Lake County, Minnesota Sheriff was more than enough. The mornings are my and crisp with only the loons announcing the new day. For the middle of summer the morning was exceptionally cold with a dew that was steaming off the old oak dock as the sun started to climb. My wife, Jan and I winterized our little cabin and added a garage complete with workbench and extra storage shortly after we decided we would try making our getaway our permanent residence.

German Lake is small enough to keep the high powered speed boats away, but big enough for fishing and some water skiing which is what the grandkids were coming over from Mankato to do today. Our little Lund 16 foot aluminum fishing boat with an old 25 horse Johnson doubled as as ski boat as long as the grandkids both stay under seventy pounds. Of course my wife would like to keep them that size forever. The addition of a padded swivel seat in back allowed me to be ski boat captain for an hour or so before the hip where I took a stray 9mm. bullet started to complain.
