When your job is to kill people as quickly as possible, it’s hard to just stop cold turkey when transferred to shuffling paperwork, but they hadn’t given me any choice.
I got to the office a little early and hung my hat and greatcoat on the empty rack by the file cabinet. At my desk I took off my holster and placed it and my Webley revolver in one of the drawers. I’d catch hell if the major caught me wearing it at my desk again. I knew we were a hundred miles behind the lines but I just didn’t feel right without having it close, or without the commando knife in my left boot.
