Galt knelt down so that he could open the access panel built into the wall of the corridor. He reached inside with one hand the colour of ash so that he could locate the short that prevented the door to his left from opening. Behind him, more crewmembers, their skin all the same uniform grey, marched wordlessly from one task to the next. A radiation alarm, a low wail, sent its warning tones down the corridors.

Along with the rest of the crew in the corridor, Galt responded immediately. They all broke into a trot, ran through a doorway outlined in red. Galt, the last one in, turned around and pressed a large circular button. The door slid shut with a pneumatic hiss. The press of people turned soundlessly to regard a monitor integrated into one wall that displayed radiation levels outside of the room in spiking blue lines on the screen. Crowded as they were in the confines of the small, square, cramped room, no one complained. Galt wondered what had happened, when they’d be set free.
