White light overwhelmed Gerard and then everything — the room, the crowd, the machine — disappeared.

Gerard’s stomach reeled as though the ground had been suddenly tugged from beneath his feet. When his queasiness ended he found he lay in the sand. Grains worked their way beneath his shirt. Clear blue sky filled the horizon.

He stood, wiped the particles from his clothes and rubbed his arms. Stomach still tender, he spun a slow circle in the sand. The desert, he thought, but where’s the research center, the black government sedan, the road?

The accelerator did this, but how? Obviously something happened, but he had no way of telling without the proper equipment. Some sort of teleportation, it appeared.
