The Virgin

Did she hear noise? People in the city? How strange it had been not to hear the normal bustle of city life. Kayla had started to get used to it. Now she leapt from bed in her tight robe, rushing over to her window in order to get a look.

Hope rose in her, something that seemed so distant the past couple of weeks. It was like a bad storm had settled over the city, one that didn’t seem to want to leave, if it ever would.

The doom of Eisenroth seemed inevitable until now. Her window creaked open, letting fresh air in. Kayla brushed her long, flowing auburn hair into the scent of a crisp morning. The castle brimmed with wild plants and flowers, sending a lovely breeze down her street every morning.

Oh, how she missed it.

The strange sound of other’s voices turned even stranger. They were frantic, charged, with a purpose. Definitely not the usual bustle of paper men, cart owners, and travelers that would go by her door before the disaster. Was it an army?

When she peered further down the street, all she saw was town people. A couple of guards were scattered around them. The people looked wild, and the shock of their frantic pace made her stick her head back into her room.
