It seemed like a simple enough favor for a friend. Well . . . really more of an acquaintance. On Friday night, Ethan had gotten a frantic call from his neighbor, Alex. Before that call, the two men had only spoken a few times, mostly at parties or when they passed each other on the street.

After a few minutes of idle chatter, Alex had asked: “Can you pet sit for me?” Ethan had agreed, of course, though he didn’t know Alex very well. Alex was on his way over with the key to his house before Ethan even had time to ask what kind of pets he would be watching.

“Thank you so much!” Alex had gushed, pressing the key into Ethan’s hand. He looked uncertain, and a little haggard. Ethan couldn’t help but notice that his eyes were red rimmed. “Normally, I wouldn’t—” he began. “It’s just . . . something came up with my family. I left you a note with instructions. I hope it isn’t too much of a burden. You’ll figure it out, I’m sure. I’ll be back on Monday.”

Ethan had just stood there awkwardly while the other man babbled. It felt like an eternity before he finally left. It wasn’t until the door was closed that he realized that he still wasn’t sure what exactly he was supposed to do.
