IT BEGAN in the summer of 1985, a few months before I would turn thirty-two, with a late-night stomachache involving extreme bloating and gas pains. No stranger to episodic intestinal trouble, I presumed the sickness would be gone in the morning, and promised myself to eat a little more carefully in the future. But I awoke the next day completely exhausted and still bloated, even though my stomach was now empty — a peculiar combination of symptoms that was unfamiliar to me.
