"Jim," I said, "I may have found something interesting."
He looked from Sue to me, resting his hands on the desktop. "What?"
"As far as making a connection between Holston and either Evermore or Crenshaw, there is nothing. Except that he killed them. As for coming closer to answering the question of why he did it, there may be a chance." I explained the search on Holston's computer.
"I want to talk with Josh to see if there's some connection with this ‘finished tasks' thing," I said. "How is it with him?"
"He isn't talking to anybody from this office or the CBI or the ATF," said Jim. "I believe he's crazy, but like a fox. He's a nut, Rick. But he's a sane nut, and we will crack him. Let me show you something."
Jim stood up and went to a door in the corner of his office. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a key. He opened the door. Behind it was a storage room, containing shelves and wall hooks. There were many items stored in that room, including guns and rifles and ammunition of all types and sizes.
"This is where we store evidence," Jim said. "All the items here have been marked and, where needed, dusted for prints." He reached up to a shelf and pulled down a shotgun. "This is the weapon Holston used on Bob Evermore and Amy Crenshaw."
He held the weapon at the stock in one hand and at the pump handle with the other. He turned and faced us.
"It's a Winchester Super X3, 12-gauge Cantilever deer shotgun, with a twenty-two inch barrel. It's a killer instrument. Take a good look at it. This is what Holston used. This is how he took it up to his shoulder."
And with that, Jim brought the shotgun up to firing position quickly, aiming at the far wall of the small room.
"He fired it, first at Amy and then at Bob."
