Nina Watson stood outside the massive temple walls and stared up at them in wonder. No matter how many temples she plundered and catacombs she ransacked, she never lost her sense of wonder. The ancient world had always fascinated her, ever since she was a little girl growing sequestered in her father’s dusty library. She was never allowed to play outside with the other children, never allowed to have real friends . . . What would her father think if he could see her now? She looked down at her chrome-plated pistols and her skin-tight traveling gear with a wry smile. She had to be limber to wriggle through tight spaces in the caves and tombs where she often found herself—besides, if she was truly being honest, she liked the feeling of the tight cloth and leather straps against her skin.
Nina took a tentative step toward the temple, shielding her eyes against the mid-afternoon sun. The Sahara Desert was beastly hot, but she hadn’t had the luxury of waiting for a better time. Once she had wrested the ancient map away from Paul McElroy and “borrowed” his heavy-duty dune buggy, she had driven through the night, knowing that it was only a matter of time until he came after her. All of her work would be worth it if the riches in the temple were half as valuable as the legends said.
