Go Into The Light

Closing my eyes can’t keep the light out; I cannot even have the illusion of cool shade to alleviate the heat the sun beats down upon my blistering face. I can’t feel anything below my hips and for that at least I am glad. The mass of the dune buggy lying across them has pushed them into the sand and the pools of sun-blackened blood at the junction of buggy and flesh tell me that they are crushed. My phone may or may not have a signal, but it is in the glove compartment. Pinned as I am, it might as well be on Mars. The same with the twenty gallons of water in jerrycans roped in the back.

My throat is dry and my tongue, swollen, fills my mouth and sticks nastily to the dry insides of my cheeks. This is a hell of a way to celebrate a fresh divorce and the success of my latest schlock (but profitable schlock) romance novel. I chuckle weakly, an effort more felt than heard. A broken dry hiss is all that escapes me. The sound is so feeble that it doesn’t even startle the sidewinder curled up in the shade of the mangled fender where it meets the sand.
