The large wolf stalked the foundation of the snow enshrouded lodge house, sniffing, searching… then turned its head to stare silently into the dense woodland.
Satisfied with its solitude the grey predator contemplated its next move. Against the lodge leaned a downed tree that had collected a heavy snow drift. With almost a laugh the wolf snorted and whipped its head through the icy air.
Without hesitation it sprang forward, scrambling up the frozen tree with claws poorly suited for such a purpose. From there the animal pounced to the second story landing. A bit of almost comical sliding on the icy surface later it eased the slightly open door wide with its thick snout.
