Bucharest, Romania – Present Day
The maid is going to want a huge tip when she sees the pile of bodies in this hotel room. Besides the trauma, it’s just going to be a holy mess.
Maybe instead of money, I should leave a sedative. She would probably appreciate that.
I’m just hoping that when the shooting is done, I will be stepping over the pile and not lying in it.
I didn’t come to this hotel in Bucharest for a shootout – in fact, for the last six months I have been running across the globe looking over my shoulder to avoid this very moment. But they caught me today, got a shot in when I had my guard down, and took a chunk out of my arm.
I don’t want to come across as a whiner, because generally I’m a good sport about things, but I think my employers could have given me a better idea of what I was getting into with this job. Yes, they paid up, but they failed to mention the part about being on my own at the end of the mission. And they certainly did not tell me that some group of killers would be pursuing me to the ends of the earth.
On the plus side, it beats high school. Six thousand miles away, my classmates are getting ready to graduate and head out into the world. They’re worried about jobs and college and parties and what they are going to do with their lives. At least I haven’t had to worry about getting a date for the Prom – I swear, I was ready to post an ad on Craigslist rather than go with an underclassman – or any of the other dramas that seemed so important before I left.
