Book I: Lost & Found
Chapter 1: Out of the Ordinary
Abby Martin was the first to notice anything out of the ordinary. An otherworldly portal was about to open at the corner of Eighth and Oak Streets, but it was a bird that caught her attention. A crow bounced off nothing in mid-air.
The warm October afternoon surrounded Abby. Birds darted through the trees and dogs barked in backyards. Wasps bumped their heads against windowpanes, searching for warmth. Abby was walking home from school with her two best friends, Calvin Kelly and Andrew Lewis. It was a day much like every other that she had experienced since starting high school less than two months ago.
Abby walked along a narrow granite curbstone – placing one foot in front of the other, maintaining her balance with all the grace she had learned in four years of tae kwon do and fencing lessons. Then, without warning, her book bag slipped down her shoulder pulling at the cotton sleeve of her tee shirt and catching in the fabric of her sweater. The bag tipped her towards the damp, close-clipped grass of Mr. Osteen’s yard. Abby spun around, swung the bag up over Andrew’s head, and did a neat pirouette without falling. Andrew ducked just a little, out of reflex, never noticing her feat of grace.
