Chapter One

Emma told herself she wouldn’t scream. She clung to the bedpost as the airship lurched. The sound of the storm was so immense it was like the end of the world. Perhaps God is punishing me, she thought as a crack of thunder shook the craft. I’ll die in water instead of fire. Rain pounded against the window. A bright flash lit her room, accompanied by an even louder boom of thunder. A cry of fear escaped her, but Emma clamped her mouth shut. Screaming wouldn’t help anything, and if this was God’s punishment, she would bear it with dignity.

Another huge vibration shook the airship, but this wasn’t caused by thunder. The ship tilted and started to plunge. Emma’s stomach dropped and she gripped the bedpost harder. Banging, cracking, groaning, the whole ship turned. Crashing, they were crashing. Then Emma did scream, she couldn’t help it. I don’t want to die, she thought. She lost her grip on the bedpost and something slammed hard against her head. Everything went black.
