Henry couldn’t see any bright lights or sparkling Christmas decorations from his level. Nothing but a noisy blur of dark coats and mittens rushing and jostling back and forth. It seemed every other kid and their dog had jammed themselves into the Sears and Roebuck department store. All pushing, shoving, and lunging to get past Henry and his parents. He could barely hear Bing Crosby singing “Christmas is a’comin’” through the store’s PA system. The rich smell of gingerbread cookies filled his nose from an unseen bakery somewhere nearby, for a few delicious moments before it faded away.
