CHAPTER ONE

“She’s at it again, J.C.” Sheriff Jason Cooper Duvall, affectionately known as J.C. to the good citizens of Utopia, Wyoming, sighed loudly as he glanced up at his deputy.

“Where?”

“Cattle Club. Clive Deaton said she had some of the local high school girls with her this time.”

“Good Lord Almighty.” J.C. swung to his feet. Clive Deaton was president of the Cattle Club and eighty if he was day. No telling what this would do to his blood pressure. “Where’s Connor?”

“Said he had to run out to the ranch for awhile.”

“Shit.” J.C. grabbed his gun, buckled his holster and tied it down around his thigh. Not that he expected to use it. It was more for show. Unlike Andy Taylor in Mayberry, the good people of Utopia thought a sheriff should always wear his gun. They also held pretty rigid ideas on how a person should behave which explained why many, such as Clive Deaton, had a problem with Emmaline Conway. She never behaved the way most of the law abiding citizens thought a lady with her background should. She continued to be a rusty cog in the well-run wheel of Utopia County.
