Chapter 1 - Venturing Out

Madeline rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. She had been up late practicing dagger-work with her father and preparing for the trip that lay ahead of her. She had been too excited to fall asleep easily, making waking up very difficult. But get up she must. It was early! Her bat, Chitter, had yet to come in from his evening hunting. Her dragon friend, Gilda, was nowhere to be seen. Gilda usually slept on a blanket on the floor of her room. Mad imagined Gilda was anxious to get going, she had been delayed too long by her injuries. Together they had to prevent a war between dragons and people, seemingly plotted by the baron of the village to the north of them. To do this, they had to steal back 6 dragon eggs without being noticed.
