Introduction

Modern Perspectives in Game Design is the second edition of Phillies and Vasel’s 2006 book Contemporary Perspectives in Game Design. There are two major changes from the first edition. First, we have added a recent syllabus for one cycle of Professor Phillies’ university course “Design of Tabletop Strategy Games”. We hope that this addition will be helpful for university instructors trying to plan their own games. Second, a new chapter by Phillies The Six Elements of Game Design has been added to the text. In addition, videotapes of Phillies’ lectures in his game design course are available on YouTube on the GeorgePhillies channel.
