A police car rolled up to join several of its kin on the front yard of a house. Aaron Grimbold, police commissioner for the district, stepped from the car. He stood for a moment in the dark, the grass a black carpet at his feet.
Why did the worst crimes always happen in the most unassuming places? He asked himself. The house looked ordinary, not a drop of malevolence in sight.
One of the deputies poked his head out the door and motioned for Aaron to come in. Inside the house several more deputies stood around the bodies of two men lying prone and unmoving on the floor.
Aaron pushed them aside to get a better look. An older man, hair gray and face creased with worry lines, lay on his back. One hand held a strange-looking cube and the other a gun. The other man looked younger, with shaggy brown hair and a muscular bulk. They both appeared to have died from gunshots to the head. Aaron grunted, his initial examination over. He looked to the deputies.
