Prologue


It might have been the moon that waked me, or perhaps the cold leaking through the tiny crack in my window that I had opened to clear the smoke from my room. As can happen when buildings are a long time unused, something had built a nest in my chimney pipe and the fire once kindled had smoked dreadfully until the obstruction came loose. It fell into the flames where it burned with a whoosh of dead twigs and grass. Thankfully it had been abandoned long ago.
