Introduction

Employee dishonesty and misconduct have an enormous effect on businesses, resulting in billions of lost funds each year in the United States. Studies have demonstrated that applicants frequently misrepresent themselves to get the jobs they want. Employee theft has also been found to account for more than 15 billion dollars of loss each year (Walczyk, Mahoney, Doverspike, & Griffith-Ross, 2009).

Even for the most seasoned professionals, the ability to differentiate between a truth and a lie, is close to chance (Eladd, 2003). A wide variety of techniques and instruments are at the disposal of organizations to screen out potentially harmful employees. This short e-book will examine two of the most popular lie detection techniques: the polygraph and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and one potentially cutting edge cognitive technique known as time restricted integrity confirmation (Tri-Con).
