Happy birthday, Em,” Kevin whispered to his now sixteen year old daughter. He and Emily were walking in the gardens to escape the confusion of people at her birthday party. He grinned at his daughter. She’s so grown up, he thought. Emily was almost as tall as her mother, Grace, and stood just an inch below six feet. She had pretty blue eyes and an angelic face with a slender nose and full lips. Her hair, light brown with just a slight tint of red reached easily half-way down her back in long waves.

Oh, Papa!” Emily exclaimed when her father pulled a small box from behind his back. Emily was glad that her parents threw her a wonderful party, but as she glanced down to the tight-fitted, purple satin dress she wore, she couldn’t help but feel out of place. She belonged in riding clothes on the back of a horse; that’s where she felt most at home. She would ride through the small forest within the property of her parents land without a care. She never felt more at ease than on a horse. Over the past four years, she had spent many days riding; she was quite skilled, too.
