Book Two

Chapter 1

Jane

She was alone now, or near enough. He was still with her, but she did not know him, and he seemed to treat her with subtle reverence, with such distant respect that she no longer tried to converse with him. Instead she tried to rest. Plain old Jane tried to do what she had done her whole life: she sat on a chair that had been brought up close to one of the porthole windows of the ship. And she watched the dark space beyond. She tried to push her mind out of the present and tried to imagine. But it wouldn't work.
