Prologue

Early September 1967

It was happenstance.
He owed the gods that placed him here, big time.
Here in her apartment when the phone rang.

He returned the phone to the cradle with meticulous precision, like a colicky baby eased by a lullaby into a fitful slumber. He tiptoed out of the room.

He had never destroyed someone’s life and was surprised by the ease with which he had done it. He knew his deed was intrinsically wrong, maybe evil. He could not have done otherwise. The man was an incursion to his world.
