Note: SUDEP is the acronym for Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy.

Although I was bereaved in 2001, I attended Brainwave’s “Living with Loss” seminar in Limerick, Ireland, for the first time, in June 2011. Brainwave is the brand name for the Irish Epilepsy Association.

I was stunned to find, among the attendance, three sets of parents whose child had died suddenly and who had not been advised of the possibility that epilepsy could take their child so abruptly.

When my wife, Nora (pictured), died in her sleep in 2001, aged 51, her sudden death was as catastrophic for all of us as any sudden death. But, and this is a very important but, it was not a surprise. We were both aware of the possibility. That awareness came from personal knowledge and professional knowledge imparted by an unlikely source.
