THE LIFE AND TIMES OF WILLARD GRIMSBY

Chapter One

And here they are,” Skip Dozier announced, sweeping into the Cosmic Chaos Comic Shop in downtown Gold Palms, Florida, “the first copies of my latest masterpiece, hot off the press.”

Maybe it was an overstatement to say Skip swept into the store. At three hundred and fifty pounds, he didn’t really sweep in anywhere these days. Amble in was more like it. But Skip had made his entrance this morning with aplomb, even grandeur, as he always did when toting a satchel-full of new work. Today Skip’s trusty leather satchel—much loved by him, though ancient, worn, and gradually pulling itself apart—held eleven graphic novels: illustrated tomes that chronicled, in forty-seven pages of florid prose and dark sensuous colors, the deeds of one Karl Denke, a German serial killer and cannibal of the early twentieth century.

Thanks, Skip,” said the store’s co-owner, Aubrey West, from the cash register. “I’m sure they’ll look great next to the unsold copies of your previous masterpieces.”
