Midnight Oil

Lisa Silverthorne

Her spirit lamp burned in the grass beside the jack-o-lantern. Pumpkin orange flames dancing in the cold winter's night as she waited on the edge of the circle. They would come tonight as they did every eve of Beltane. Flames licking their smoky heels. Bass voices moaning above the clacking of dead leaves. Smoke charring the air. Dust rising. This time, their midnight gathering would end differently. The Witches of Beltane would come to reclaim those burned centuries before, luring out a victim to trade. Circles in the grass marked their point of combat. Their victim was her next door neighbor. They had filled his head with lies and now she waited, turning the spirit lamp down low. Finally, she knew their weakness.
