What is the 20-60-40 Triathlon Weight Training Routine?

It’s a simple, no-nonsense weight training routine that focuses on sport-specific muscles and actions to improve performance in Sprint and Olympic distance triathlon. When done correctly, it can be completed in thirty minutes and allows sufficient recovery for other workouts throughout the week.

“206040” stands for my goals in an Olympic distance triathlon: 1500m swim in 20 minutes, 40k bike in 60 minutes, and 10k run in 40 minutes. I haven’t reached that goal but I intend to get there at some point.

The overall intent of this weight training workout is to build muscular endurance, that level of fitness that combines strength with volume and time. This should help you go hard (but not all out) for a longer period of time.

Scientific studies are at odds of whether or not weight resistance training helps triathletes get faster. Simply put, this workout doesn’t care about scientific studies. It’s about common sense that getting stronger and increasing endurance will make you faster.
