All I Want for Christmas
“Santa Clause is coming to town; he’s making a list, and checking it twice.” The children were prepping their voices to go out caroling. The truth was the kids looked adorable dressed as elves. I looked down at my wine and noticed that the glass was empty, yet again. Time to refill it; I was trying to drink away the loneliness that was encompassing me again.
“Everything alright?” Eric asked as he caught me in the kitchen, filling my glass with more wine. He was my best friend, truth be told he was my only friend. There was actual concern in his voice, something I was not used to. “Bobby, you have always drank a lot at my Christmas parties but this year it is out of control. You’ve finished off almost three bottles by yourself. What’s going on?”
“Nothing. You know the usual.” I was stalling because I hadn’t realized that I had gone through so much wine. It was a good thing that he didn’t know about the shots of bourbon that I had taken in the bathroom; otherwise he would insist that I stay with him for the night. “You know how I am during the holidays. This is not anything that is new, or something that is going to change in the immediate future.”
