The Prince, dressed in the ceremonial furs of his station, bearing the arms of his people, with their song on his lips and their well-wishes in his heart, strode confidently into the beast's lair. It waited for him, fat and bloated like a shadow-gorged tick, sightless eyes tracking his every move. His steps across the cavern were the first to tread the stone floor, creating a pattern that would echo down through the centuries, but this Prince had no guidelines to follow. He was a pioneer, the protector of his young people, and facing their first threat.
