In a perfect restaurant, there would be only one thing on the menu.
Darlene and her friends were not eating in a perfect restaurant. Far from it. This was one of those national chains, and the menu was almost big as the table and eight pages long—not counting the pages of drinks and desserts.
And then the waiter wanted to know if he could tell them about the specials.
“Are we ready?” Zach asked when the waiter returned with their waters.
Sophie and Peter were ready.
Zach was ready.
But not Darlene.
She made a face, and Zach told the waiter they needed another minute.
“Take your time,” Sophie said. She was sitting across from Darlene and when she spoke Darlene looked again at the ring on Sophie’s finger.
