The Cost of an Orange

Tommy slammed the rickety barn door with his foot, a steaming pail of milk dangling from one skinny arm, the other extended for balance. Across the dirt yard he could see his mother’s silhouette, black before a yellowed window. Then it disappeared and the kitchen door swung wide, surrendering warm air that kissed his frozen cheeks. He didn’t dawdle on the doorstep.

Inside, the boy dipped a tin cup into the frothy liquid and drank the milk down in one breath, savoring its warmth. It was a meager breakfast for one who began chores long before dawn, but it tasted all the sweeter for it. He handed the cup to his mother and took the bread and cheese she offered.
