“Do you know why you’re here?”

Leah peered at her manager, Mr. Kinsdale, who held his arms straight and firm, his fingers interlocked.

“No, I have no idea.”

“Of course you don’t. Why would you?”

Then he shifted in his seat, and pulled out an envelope which must have been under his ass, because when Leah took it, it was still warm. He frowned at her, at the same time studying her, looking for any emotion that wasn’t confusion.

“You really don’t know what it is, do you?”

Leah had no clue. She was just told to come to her manager’s office at once. As far as she was concerned, she had no business with Mr. Kinsdale or anyone else. She got her job done efficiently with no problems.

The envelope was beige with a strange crest on the top. It was strange, a rose with whips for its stem.

It only said “Leah” on it. No return address. Not even an address to their office.

“What is it?”

He shrugged. “Hell if I know. My higher up gave it to me, told me not to open it under any circumstance. Said it would be my job if I did. He also told me that I couldn’t ask you what it was. Told me that he didn’t even know what it was.”

“OK,” she said. Leah flipped it over. “Is it safe?”

“It was screened,” he said, nodding, his fingers uncurling for the first time. “The only thing that’s in it is a letter.”
