The Figures

A Short Story by Nigel Hems

I

The figures started to drift slowly into the distance. I watched them closely as they crept onwards, with fluidity and grace, feeling more entwined with them as I continued to keep track of their ghostly steps. I could hear them deliberating amongst themselves, as I listened out of a distilled version of sounds presented to my ears: the sounds were calming to me in one particular aspect, almost resembling sounds of nature, ones that were free of complication, like skylarks chirping in a sunny meadow. I quickly abandoned these ideas, as the figures began to resemble a gang of unearthly bandits roaming around in search of quarry.
