13th March, 1902

Thursday morning


In plain clothes, Inspector Pascal and Sergeant Iturbi stepped out of the Cabildo building into the stable yard. On this morning in March, the yard was still cool and shady. Pascal's driver, Castro, stood up.

"The docks," Pascal said.

"Yes, señor."

Pascal and Iturbi got into the cabin of Pascal's police carriage. Castro climbed up onto the front of the carriage and cracked his whip over the horses. The beasts started to pull, hooves clattering on the cobbles of the stable yard.
