On the first night, Ian woke up in a sweat, noticing that he had kicked off his blanket in his sleep. He figured the thermostat must have been set too high, but he was almost grateful. It gave him an excuse to get up and go to the kitchen. He tried to make as little noise as possible with his steps and imagined he would laugh at himself for that later. On tiptoes, he entered the kitchen and crept over to the ceramic bowl that sat on the counter. He could just make out the shape of the root in the bowl, sitting in its small pool of milk. Apparently there had been no change since he had gone to bed, though he had not really expected there to be.
