About this Book
This book is built on a long telephone interview I had with Ms. Rosenberg in August of 2012. Part of that interview was broadcast as a radio piece called "Mother's Little Helper" by WINGS: Women's International News Gathering Service.. This book contains both aired and unaired portions of the interview as well as my review of Ms. Rosenberg's book: Born with a Junk Food Deficiency: How flaks, quacks and hacks pimp the public health. That review was first published on a website called The Leftist Review early in 2013. Due to differences in writing style between broadcast and print, the inclusion of previously unpublished material, the addition of some of Martha's pointedly funny illustrations, and a little expanded reporting I have added to fill in some details that were left out of our interview, readers of this book are getting a more complete version of what I learned than they would have with the WINGS broadcast and book review alone.
Chapter 1: The Why and How of Born with a Junk Food Deficiency
In 2012, Rosenberg's first book, Born with a Junk Food Deficiency: How flaks, quacks and hacks pimp the public health, was published by Prometheus Books. Despite its name, about half the book is devoted to an investigation of the predations of Big Pharma.
