Dan raced down the hall. There were no doors; there were no doorways opening into the hallway; there was no place to escape the hall. Dan’s feet raced as fast as his heart.
He heard the footsteps behind him. They were slow and pounding.
“Surely,” thought Dan, “I’m running away from them. I’m running fast and they are pounding slowly.”
Dan glanced back - they were gaining on him.
“This can’t be,” thought Dan.
“Stop it!” screamed Dan. “Stop chasing me!”
He glanced back again. They were still gaining; the three of them were closer, almost within reach.
There was a small metal table on rollers in the hallway. Dan grabbed it and slid to a stop. He picked up the metal table and smashed the wall. He punched a dimple in the sheetrock wall. He smash the table against the wall again, and again, and again.
