Safely hidden from his prey by sheer distance, Sresre Kaahn piloted the dog to the edge of the stragglers’ camp. The dog’s vision was still clear—neural degeneration hadn’t begun to set in yet—and even scent impressions were registering with great clarity. Although the dog’s vision was sharp, Sresre Kaahn didn’t know that because of the crystal-clear images he was seeing. The interface didn’t work that way, and he wasn’t seeing any such thing. Instead, he saw pixel clusters on a 8-color ‘heat map’ representing optical nerve input such as motion, light/dark sensing, color input. Olfactory and audio input were represented by a second and third similar ‘heat map’ in the lower right and left insets of the operator’s screen. It was an excellent connection as well, free of interference or signal degradation. To the untrained eye, it was a mosaic of rainbow blobs and static. To the trained eye, there were trees, waving fronds of vegetation, the distinctive symbol-shape that meant that the dog was seeing the deliberate bipedal motion of the human form.
