Chapter 1: Everybody’s Talking About the Fear of God
Ispettore Arrigio Fioravanti stood listening to a sergeant in a peaked cap and a blue shirt explain how they’d found Yasushi Matsumoto’s dead body in an alleyway five minutes from La Fenice. In the background, a clutch of other uniforms awaited the paramedics and expounded the absurd notion that the middle-aged Japanese tourist was the latest victim of a killer with three previous hits under his belt. It was the time of year when the Bora and the Sirocco – the winds that arrived from Africa every autumn like gripes – opened up the streets of Venice and bothered its waters. Alleyways filled with cool air, the crowds grew tighter and more impatient, the sea slopped harder against the canal walls.
