You’re browsing through craigslist ads and find a great east village studio apartment. Your lease is up July 1st. You call the real estate agent associated with the ad. The agent replies, “That apartment has been rented.” How is this possible? It’s only June 2nd. Welcome to the world of renting in New York City. And yes, it’s absolutely possible. As of 2012, nyc.gov states there are 8.3million people living in New York City with 3.3million housing units available. You do the math. Apartments move faster than you can say, “I’d like to make an appointment to see this?” The savvy hunter doesn’t need to see 15 apartments to make a sensible decision. She’s generally realistic in the search. She doesn’t possess a must have list as long as her arm. She’s quick to act and confident in her choice. She view 3 or 4 apartments, find one that suits her needs and with a neat folder of physical paperwork, applies immediately. This is how it should be done but rarely is the case. If you are prepared, focused and realistic, you can land a great apartment. But you must be quick to act on it. Don’t delay. Don’t sleep on it. Apply.
