Chapter One

Caulden stabbed his spade into the dirt and heard an unusual clank. After hours of digging and hearing the same grinding sounds of metal on rocks and soil, this stood out. This was metal on metal. He pulled out the shovel and placed it next to the trench. He leaned over the crevice to peer at the bottom. The deck boards three feet above the ground created the crawlspace and forced him to stay on his knees. The encased area, a manual laborer’s nightmare, offered only intermittent bright razors of sunlight to split the dark, musty, shadows.
