FROM LOSS TO HEALING:
PERSONAL TALES ABOUT THE FIRST YEAR OF
BEREAVEMENT
“When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.” – Kahlil Gibran
On December 22, 2007, my father died unexpectedly from complications of what was supposed to be a standard surgical procedure. My family was shocked. None of us could comprehend that he was actually gone. I couldn’t imagine living in this world without my dad, my fierce protector and loyal supporter, and I wasn’t sure how I’d ever be able to cope with and recover from the loss.
Since then, I have dealt with the death of my dad through writing. My words have been my therapy. Journaling all my thoughts, memories and experiences has helped me to work through the pain and grief, and eventually begin the process of healing. Writing it all down has allowed me to really dig into my emotions and get to the heart of what I was enduring, so I could feel it fully, then let it go, and move forward.
